Our mission and vision

We provide competitive knowledge on the most beautiful university campus of Hungary with our modern and high-quality educational activities, and contribute to the development of science and society with our research results. 

We are socially responsible, sensitive to societal challenges and responsive to economic needs. We build a staff- and student-centred, inclusive university community based on the traditions of Selmec. 

The University of Miskolc, as a defining institution of higher education in Hungary, contributes to the development of universal science and Hungarian society in the spirit of the Magna Carta of European Universities (Bologna, 1988) and the Berlin, Bergen and London Declarations, by providing multifaceted, interdisciplinary education, and by high-level research and development work. The University of Miskolc fulfils this mission in co-operation with its faculty, staff and students, as well as with its domestic and international partners, in accordance with the Hungarian legal framework, the Higher Education Act and the sectoral quality policy: 

• as a research university, and as a key regional player in the field of knowledge creation and knowledge transfer for economic development, by promoting and initiating the cooperation of the competitive sector, business, local governments and governmental actors for the successful implementation of regional, national and international education, research and development programmes; 
• as the intellectual centre for training and scientific development in Northern Hungary in the fields of materials science, humanities, health, earth sciences, law, economics, engineering, education, musicology, social and natural sciences; 
• the training tasks of higher education in line with the Bologna process; 
• designing, implementing and developing multi-cycle (bachelor, master, PhD) programmes in Hungarian and in foreign languages; 
• and the operation and development of the system of continuing vocational training and adult education based on these programmes, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by distance learning, with a view to the needs of lifelong learning; 
• building on the needs of the labour market and scientific progress; 
• the University’s management expects all its teachers, staff and students to commit themselves and carry out their work in this spirit.

Tradition, innovation – the university of the future 

Within the framework of the Green and Smart Campus concept, we are building the university city of the future by developing existing parks, community areas, digitalisation, and expanding smart, sustainable services, ensuring the renewal of the university inside and outside. 

Our aim is to make the University of Miskolc a leading educational and research university in the region, in Hungary and on the international map of higher education, meeting the needs of the labour market in the coming decades. We strive to develop adaptable knowledge based on continuously developing professional competences in the context of high-quality, elite training courses recognised at international and national level. By building a Miskolc-based training network system, we aim to implement our training activities within a flexible education and student service model as the leading human resource development institution in Northeast Hungary and as a training centre for international students. 

Our aim is to achieve research results of national and international importance, both in basic and applied research, which will strengthen our role as an innovative knowledge centre. In this way, we aim to serve the national economy and the economic and social development of the region. Our priority is to increase our international visibility and embeddedness, and to move up in international and national rankings. 

We aim to increase the importance of business thinking within the institution by strengthening entrepreneurial activity and exploiting new opportunities for innovation. 

In order to increase staff satisfaction, the University of Miskolc offers career paths and supports the self-development of its staff. Our work culture focuses on providing a family-friendly workplace, building community and promoting health. To this end, we are continuously expanding our high-quality health services and sports facilities for both staff and students. By renewing support services, we ensure the high quality of the University’s core functions. 

As part of our commitment to social responsibility, we effectively serve the cause of social inclusion through our research, training and third mission programmes. We aim to be a university open to all ages, with a presence in the cultural sphere.
