When did you start your studies and why did you choose the University of Miskolc?

My journey at the University of Miskolc began on the 10th of September 2023. I chose the University of Miskolc because of its state-of-the-art programs that offer updated and relevant subjects, aligning well with my academic and career goals. Additionally, the campus is well-equipped with all the facilities and services that an international student might need, making it an ideal environment for both study and personal growth.

What are the places and activities that an international student should definitely try in Miskolc?

As an international student in Miskolc, there are several must-visit places and activities that offer a rich experience of the local culture and natural beauty. Such as, exploring Lillafüred for its great nature with its diverse landscape, and relaxing at Miskolctapolca Cave Bath. Furthermore, participating in local festivals, such as Kocsonyafesztivál (Miskolc Jelly Festival) in March, and Békafesztivál (Frog Festival) later this year. The most notable event was visiting Edelény Palace, where you can explore the rich Hungarian history and enjoy one of many European palaces.

What are/were your biggest challenges during your studies and how did you overcome these challenges?

The transition to Miskolc presented several significant challenges, including adapting to a new language, navigating unfamiliar roads, and interacting with new people. Additionally, the education system in Hungary is considerably different from what I was accustomed to in Syria, which required me to adjust to new learning methods.

Another challenge was the process of issuing residence documents. Coordinating appointments with government offices was often difficult, as they frequently conflicted with my academic timetable or other obligations.

To overcome these challenges, I took the following steps:

  • Patience and Persistence: I allowed myself time to adapt to the new environment and did not rush the process of settling in.
  • Creating a Supportive Community: I actively sought out fellow students, both Hungarian and international, to build a network of support. This community provided valuable advice, shared experiences, and helped me feel more connected.
  • Seeking Support: I regularly consulted with my mentor and the International Relations Office (IRO) for guidance and support.
  • Language Learning: I made a concerted effort to learn Hungarian, which helped me navigate daily life and better integrate into the local community.
  • Communication: I maintained open communication with my professors, especially when I needed to attend appointments for document processing, to ensure they were informed about my absence and could provide any necessary accommodation.
What skills and benefits have you already gained from studying at the University of Miskolc?

I have already gained a wider view of the world, as participating in many activities has helped me make friends with people from different backgrounds and from almost every continent. In addition, my programme introduced me to ideas and knowledge that complemented my previous work experience, encouraging me to further my education and pursue a PhD after graduation.
