TIMREX, launched in 2022 as part of an educational project, responds to the EIT RawMaterials call for a master’s programme in mineral resources exploration. The TIMREX MSc programme aims to train earth science specialists, primarily geologists and geological engineers, to meet the EU’s mineral resource exploration needs.
Building on existing strong MSc programmes in minerals exploration, TIMREX offers joint education with additional entrepreneurship skills. A gap analysis revealed that mineral resources exploration, with a focus on field activities and sustainability performance, is missing from the portfolio of EIT-Labelled master programmes. The consortium, led RIS-universities, will involve non-academic partners in programme’s development and implementation.
These goals will be achieved through three main competence-development pillars of the project:
Campus-based MSc programmes with at least one-semester mobility windows or double degree schemes between the university partners. The cohort starting in September 2022 will go along the mobility window scheme for all universities. Double or joint degree schemes will be established at UNIZG-RGNF, UM and WUST during 2022. From September 2023, a hybrid mobility system using double or joint degree schemes in different configurations will apply. LTU will primarily cooperate on the mobility window basis. Each partner’s T-shaped curriculum will include core earth science disciplines focused on mineral exploration. Innovation and entrepreneurship competences will follow a modular system, complementing semester courses and partly delivered through intensive fieldwork modules of Pillar 2.
Intensive fieldwork during the summer period between M1 and M2 academic years. This will be a hallmark of the TIMREX programme, offering a more intensive joint education activity compared to other labelled programmes. The summer period will include 7-8 weeks of fieldwork for students at exploration camps in Sweden and Hungary, as well as internship at companies.
Entrepreneurship, innovative and socio-civic skills development, utilizing the EFG’s mentoring programme and SME and RTO partners of the consortium.
