Hungarian Diaspora

The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian Diaspora outside Europe and are interested in pursuing studies at a Hungarian higher education institution. 

The aim of the programme is to support Hungarian diaspora communities in the acquisition of competitive knowledge while strengthening their Hungarian identity. 

The scholarship programme is supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is managed by Tempus Public Foundation. 

Who can apply?

You can apply for the programme, if: 

• you maintain your Hungarian identity, which you demonstrate in your application 
• you have lived minimum 10 years outside Hungary before the submission of your application and have completed the last 4 years of your secondary education in a foreign country 
• you have an address outside Hungary and are a citizen of any country in the world, except for the countries of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia and the Zakarpatska Oblast part of Ukraine 
• you hold a recommendation from a Hungarian diaspora organisation or a Hungarian Diplomatic Representation of the respective country

Benefits for scholarship holders

• no tuition fee 
• monthly stipend (upon request): for bachelor and master students HUF 43 700/month, for PhD students HUF 140 000/month for the first two years, and HUF 180 000 per month in the second two years after the complex exam  
• dormitory place or HUF 40 000/month worth of accommodation allowance (upon request) 
• medical insurance 
• single-use travel allowance (upon request)
