Short summary

The project aims to create a free, easily accessible online course to support the professional development of physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and other professionals working with musculoskeletal problems. The educational material will be particularly useful for trainers looking for sample scenarios for practical lessons. The course will be delivered as a 15-hour, open-access online course that teaches specific techniques and methods for the treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction, with a focus on improving communication with patients. The aim is that participants will not only become excellent manual therapists, but also take responsibility for the emotional, psychological and social well-being of patients.

Each lesson focuses on different patient groups, detailing diagnostic and therapeutic methods and their theoretical background. The teaching material places great emphasis on communication with the patient, taking into account cultural, ethnic and social differences and the importance of mutual respect. The project partners come from different European countries, which ensures that the course takes a multi-perspective approach. The course material will be available in English and in the partners’ national languages.

The project will create a platform for the international development of the physiotherapy profession. Participants will be able to prove their knowledge through a final examination and, upon successful completion, will receive a certificate that will increase their chances on the labour market. Students of physiotherapy can also earn ECTS credits, which are required to obtain a diploma.

The main aim of the project is to develop the participants’ communication skills and cultural competences. This is particularly important for physiotherapists who often have to work with patients from different social and cultural backgrounds. The online course provides participants with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how to communicate with different patients, taking into account their age, gender, social and cultural background. The project also aims to exchange experiences between partners and to improve the education system for physiotherapists. Universities will benefit from the expansion of their educational offer, while health institutions will benefit from the enhancement of the competences of their professionals. Students and professionals will be better prepared to deal with intercultural differences and difficult situations in their work. The novelty of the project lies in the application of the principles of intercultural communication and social constructivism, which focus on the different needs and challenges of different patient groups. The international collaboration will result in a multidimensional, practice-based educational toolkit that will provide all partners and users with a new and innovative approach to the training of physiotherapists.
