Miskolc University Days – MEN 

This four-day festival, held annually since 1977, features concerts by the most popular Hungarian and foreign musicians. But the Miskolc University Days are more than just a traditional pop music festival. Among other things, the MEN is the venue for the election of the student rector, and the event is also a spectacular showcase for the faculties’ playful competitions. 

Miskolc University Freshman Party 

The Freshmen Party is a fitting and entertaining opening of university life, where first-year students take the oath of freshmen and officially become citizens of the university. The event takes place in the main building, the old assembly hall and the Honours Hall. 

Christmas Concert 

The Béla Bartók Faculty of Music at the University of Miskolc celebrates the festive season with a concert. The concert will feature Advent music performed by the faculty’s students and invited artists. 

Miskolc University Spring Festival 

The Spring Festival at the University of Miskolc, which traditionally starts with the concert at Easter, is a series of classical music events. The festival will feature prestigious guest performers as well as students from the Béla Bartók Faculty of Music at the University of Miskolc, the faculty’s symphony orchestra and chamber ensembles. 

Miskolc International Mineral Festival 

The event, organised by the University of Miskolc, is one of the most important mineral festivals in Central Europe, attracting 7-8 thousand visitors every year. The two-day event features representative thematic exhibitions, scientific and promotional presentations, a geological playhouse and a mineral fair.

Entertainment in and around Miskolc

Miskolc National Theatre

The first Hungarian-speaking stone theatre opened to the public in 1823. The theatre complex houses the Museum of Theatre History and Actors, which commemorates the history of theatre in Miskolc. 

CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival 

CineFest, one of Hungary’s best-known film festivals, presents a selection of the world’s best films every year. The event showcases the most important and valuable films of the past year, all of which are Hungarian premieres in the competition programme. 

Avasi Borangolás/ Avas Wein Tours 

The most unique wine and gastronomic event in the country takes place in the heart of Miskolc, on the centuries-old Avas wine cellar district, around 11 May, close to the city’s birthday. Wine tours, open cellars, wine dinners and concerts await guests. 

Gastro Plaza 

One of Miskolc’s most popular gastronomic events, which takes place at various venues in the city, such as the Csengey Courtyard, Elisabeth Square, the Square of the Knights’ Tournaments and sometimes at the University of Miskolc. The music is provided by DJs, the wines by renowned winemakers and the gastronomic experience by the city’s renowned restaurants. 

Miskolc Puppet Theatre 

The city’s puppet theatre has been entertaining young and old for nearly 30 years. The name “Miracle Mill” refers to the fact that the puppet theatre started in 1992 in a former steam mill. 

HELYNEKEM 

The venue is a real curiosity in the cultural life of Miskolc. The ” rom pub”, which has been open since 2012, hosts concerts, public meetings, theatre performances, poetry readings, musicians and bands, slam poetry and dance. 

Lillafüred 

One of the most attractive parts of Miskolc is Lillafüred, located in the Bükk Mountains. Hikers and people looking for relaxation visit the Palace Hotel, the Lillafürde Hanging Garden, the highest waterfall in Hungary, the Anna Cave, the St. Stephen Cave and last but not least the Lake of Hámor. From the Zsófia Lookout Tower on the hillside opposite the Palace Hotel, you can enjoy an unrivalled view of the surrounding countryside. 

Lillafüred State Forest Railway 

The railway is a real “experience”. Its route leads through valleys, hillsides and tunnels from Diósgyőr, through Lillafüred to Garadna.  

Miskolctapolca Cave Baths 

The Miskolctapolca Cave Baths are a unique bathing place in Europe, built in a cave above a hot spring. The warm water and the climate of the cave are therapeutic.  

Avasi lookout tower 

The 72-metre Avasi Lookout, perched on the top of the Avas hill overlooking the centre of Miskolc, offers an unrivalled panorama of the city.The lookout was inaugurated in 1963 and underwent a complete renovation in 2023. On the parapet of the observation deck, the most iconic buildings of the city are represented by models by sculptor Gábor Országh.  

Meat Jelly Festival 

This winter gastronomic and cultural festival is nationally renowned for its special programmes and inimitable atmosphere. Held since 2004, the event is a blend of culture and tradition.    

Herman Otto Museum 

The largest museum in Miskolc has more than 600,000 artefacts in permanent, temporary and virtual exhibitions. The main building houses the Picture Gallery, which also displays rare works of art, and the Pannon Sea Museum, which is notable for its archaeological and mineral collections. The museum also has a valuable ethnographic collection.  

Miskolc Gallery 

The branch of the Herman Ottó Museum collects and exhibits contemporary art. In addition to its temporary exhibitions, it organises the National Graphic Triennial and the Miskolc Winter Exhibition. For decades, the gallery has been located in the city centre, in a mansion built before 1704 and once occupied by the Dőry family.    

House of Arts Miskolc 

One of the city’s cultural centres, with a auditorium, two art cinemas and a fine arts gallery. The building, designed by Miskolc architect Pál Árvai in 1925, was originally home to the Uránia Film Theatre and later the Béke Cinema.
