Short description

The aim of the programme is to train geologists and geophysical engineers with expertise in geology, geophysics and geoinformatics. They will have skills necessary for the prospecting and exploration of geological structures and mineral resources, assessing mineral resources and reserves, conducting environmental geological surveys and identifying environmental pollution.

Additional information

Started in 2022 September, the programme offers a mobility window and special field work training activities. The MSc in Earth Science Engineering is a part of the TIMREX education initiative, supported by EIT RawMaterials. Students can spend their third semester at either Lulea Technical University in Sweden or Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland. They can participate in a specific field exploration camp between the semesters, as well as have internship opportunities through the RIS Internship programme.

Graduates will receive during graduation the Earth Science Engineering MSc diploma from the University of Miskolc, with training elements focused on innovative mineral resource exploration in collaboration with academic and non-academic partners of the TIRMEX project.

Entrance examination

Stage 1 – Eligibility Screening

Applicants are screened based on the documents uploaded to the Dreamapply system. Those who do not meet the eligibility criteria (relevant bachelor’s degree, language certificate of B2 or higher, or proof of studies conducted in English) are filtered out.

Stage 2 – Document Assessment

Applicants are assessed based on their uploaded documents and can earn up to 30 points. Points are awarded for professional background (qualification and work experience) based on transcript of records (15 points), motivation letter (10 points), and ranking of the higher education institution where the previous degree was obtained (5 points).

Stage 3 – Online Entrance Exam

The online entrance exam lasts 20-30 minutes and includes pre-set questions to assess the applicant’s management knowledge, professional skills, thesis or project work, and language proficiency. Applicants can score up to 70 points: for professional background 50 points, spoken language skills 20 points.

Stage 4 – Final Evaluation

Applicants can score a maximum of 100 points (30 points for document assessment and 70 points from the online entrance exam). Those who score at least 60 points will be admitted to the programme. Those who score less than 60 points will be rejected.

Career prospects

Graduates with these professional qualifications are well suited for mining and exploration companies, research institutes and specialized authorities dealing with the management, planning and regulation of mineral raw materials. The graduates’ strong engineering training combined with earth sciences knowledge prepares them for careers in mineral exploration, exploitation and the supervision of earth science technologies.
