Our MA programme in Cultural Anthropology offers students a twofold opportunity. They can both explore historically and socially variable cultural phenomena across different regions including Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and South America with a special emphasis on Central Europe and deepen their understanding of local contexts and sociocultural processes in a globalized world. We welcome students from all over the world who are interested in cultural diversity, human nature, the application of social scientific knowledge and the special sociocultural contexts of Central Europe.
Any kind of BA or BSc (or equivalent) diploma, preferably in the social sciences and a good command of English, written and spoken, proofed by a language certificate (B2 or higher), or a certificate of study conducted in English, and a motivation letter (2-3 pages). Applicants are admitted if they score at least 75 points (document assessment max. 20 points and online admission interview max. 80 points).
During the 20–30-minute online admission interview, the applicant’s knowledge in social sciences, research interests and motivation, commitment to study cultural anthropology and language proficiency is assessed. Successful candidates are expected to answer the following questions on their professional backgrounds, and motivations:
Based on the admission interview successful candidates (1) have a good command of written and oral knowledge in English (30% – 20 points), (2) present a well-composed motivational letter (30%), have a basic level of general literacy in the social sciences (20%), are interested in the contemporary sociocultural conditions of Central Europe (10%) and are motivated to gain a deeper understanding on how to apply social science knowledge in practical contexts (10% – all together 60 points).
The degree prepares students for advanced postgraduate research or careers as practitioners in applied and visual anthropology. Graduates can work in civil society and the business world, use qualitative methods, prepare policy briefs and recommendations for the government sector, and act as change agents to address sociocultural conflicts.
